Dobrogea Gorges (Cheile Dobrogei) are some of the oldest rock formations in Europe (limestones dating back to Mesozoic period). The area was once covered by the Black Sea and by coral reefs.
The canyon is situated 40 km from the Black Sea coast, it covers a total lenght of 10 km and an area of 300 hectares.
Two important caves from palaeontologic point of view are La Adam Cave and Gura Dobrogei Cave.
Dobrogea Gorge has been declared a natural reservation and climbing is forbidden.
